Soöruz Organic Oysterprene - Neoprene Free Wetsuits
Share
Whilst performance has always been the most important factor when working with materials at Soöruz, there has always been a strong movement towards making the most eco-conscious decisions. This focus lead to the creation of Oysterprene foam to replace limestone neoprene with recycled oyster shells. They both are made of the same chemical, but one is a waste product from the food industry which grows quickly, whilst rocks take thousands of years to form. It also involves less water and power to extract them. Whilst this was a great step in the right direction, and combined with recycled tyre materials it greatly reduced the amount of petroleum derived material, it wasn't enough. The end goal is always to move away from petroleum based neoprene.
Soöruz Organic Oysterprene takes this next step by combining the proven Oysterprene formula with natural rubber to create a neoprene free foam. Most neoprene free wetsuits are made with natural rubber. The most well known is foam is Yulex. Soöruz themselves had developed Bioprene too. These always had the eco credentials but lacked the performance. They were heavier and lacked stretch. The whole monocrop situation is another issue, but its a whole lot better than the petroleum industry.
Organic Oysterprene was first added into the Soöruz Guru Pro range in Summer 2024, then into the Fighter and Divine ranges for Winter 2024. These ranges account for the bulk of the sales so it is great to have such a large percentage of the wetsuits sold chloroprene free.
