Collection: Surfboard Fins
Fins are one of the most underrated variables in surfing. Swap the fins and you can fundamentally change how a board feels underfoot — the same board can go from loose and skatey to locked-in and drivey depending on what's in the boxes.
The most common setups are:
Single fin — one central fin, associated with longboarding and classic surfing. Generates drive and hold in a straight line, with smooth, drawn-out turns rather than sharp pivots. The bigger the fin, the more hold and stability; smaller fins allow more slide and a looser feel.
Twin fin — two fins, no centre fin. Fast and free, with a skatey, flowing feel. Works brilliantly in smaller, mushier waves where you want speed and looseness. Less hold on steeper, more powerful faces — the board can feel washy or unpredictable if pushed too hard.
Thruster — the three-fin setup that became the standard from the early 1980s and remains the most common configuration in shortboarding. The two side fins generate drive and hold through turns, while the central trailer fin adds control and prevents the board sliding out. Versatile across a wide range of conditions and wave types.
Quad — four fins, no centre fin. Like a twin but with more hold and speed through the bottom turn. Generates a lot of drive and works especially well in hollow, powerful waves or smaller waves where you want to maximise speed down the line. Less pivot than a thruster at the top of the wave.
Fin size matters within any setup. Larger fins grip harder, provide more stability and drive, and suit heavier or more powerful surfers and bigger, faster waves. Smaller fins release more easily, feel looser, and are more forgiving — good for smaller surf and surfers who want a more playful feel. Fin rake (how far back the fin sweeps) also affects how a board turns: upright fins pivot quickly, swept-back fins draw longer, more arcing turns.
Fin boxes - Most modern fins use either FCS (double tab) or Futures (single tab) systems, so check your boxes before buying. There are also now the clip in FCSII boxes.
